Here's an article by Joelle Jacinto of Pulse.ph on Narda and NARDAmageddon: 04.09.2007:
NARDA'S LAST FLIGHT
WELL-LOVED ROCK BAND NARDA HAS FOUGHT THE GOOD FIGHT FOR OVER FOUR
YEARS. THEY'VE GIVEN US AMAZING PERFORMANCES AND MANY WONDERFUL SONGS.
WE'RE GOING TO MISS THEM
It
seemed like they were enjoying the successes they’d achieved so far and
were ready for more successes in the future, and, as Ryan said, he
already had new material for the next album. Shortly after, Narda
announced: they were going to disband. Their last gig would be on April
12, a gig they cheekily entitled NARDAmaggedon. Estagle had quit the
band, which meant they’d have to take the trouble of finding/teaching a
replacement amid busy skeds and other projects. Katwo’s and Ryan’s
separate web posts on the upcoming break-up recall how hard it was to
take off in Narda’s early days, what with all the lineup changes and
other setbacks, and maybe, with yet another lineup change, it was time
to lay Narda to rest. Continue reading "Narda's Last Flight" >> If you read the article at Pulse.ph, you'd be able to see something that looks like this:
| Title | Artist | Type | | 100 Taon | Narda | Truetone |

Ringtunes from Narda (one reason to click over to Pulse.ph)! Plus, Pulse.ph's Gig of the Week is:
NARDAmageddon: Ang Huling Lipad ng Narda One of our favorite bands is callling it a day. That sucks. But they're going out with a bang at SaGuijo this Thursday, April 12, 2007 at 9:30 PM! Featuring Boy Elroy, The Dorques, Ishi, Switch, and of course -- for the last time -- Narda.
Join them as they launch their music video "Gasolina," and play songs
old and new, while you wail uncontrollably and break bottles of beer
over your head in sheer deranged grief at the loss to our music scene.
We'll be there with tissue paper and bandages.
Posted by narda on Apr 9, '07 5:38 AM for everyone This was written by Rain Contreras in his blog at raincontreras.com:
Having just read the magazine articles on Narda’s official Multiply site, I decided to turn on to the older songs this Sunday morning at work from the band whose demise will be realized on April 12. That move proved to be apt for the moment, since as much as I consider their latest record, Discotillion, to be the group’s best effort, the old EP’s still spew delightful pop songs to bob your head to.
A re-invention must be the word the press wants to impress
on the readers for Narda’s current mold. I won’t go into that anymore,
since the articles (here and here) have expounded on it already; what struck me most were comparisons to their old sound to The Cardigans and The Sundays.
I am impressed by older albums by the former, but Harriet Wheeler’s
band (the latter) has, easily, nailed itself firmly on my perpetual
favorite bands list. That said, having owned all of Narda’s early EP’s,
I haven’t drawn a line connecting the Narda dot to any other known
band, moreso their local contemporaries.
Let me start properly now: my curiosity for Narda stemmed from random Livejournal blog entries proclaiming how hawt
the lead singer of this Ateneo-based band was, and that their records
are available at Sarabia Optical, at the UP Shopping Center. One
fateful afternoon at my old alma mater, lead to an evening on my
computer when I dived unconsciously into unheard-of fanboy-ism.

Raw and pleasant were the acoustic songs from the Burador
EP (2003), though that was my least played record from their
discography. Not necessarily their weakest, since the ditties do meet
happy campfire standards, with the sweet lovers’ song ‘Ang Gabi‘ leading the pack; but it was obvious that the Narda voice needs a lift to somewhere else, where she can be mighty.

Salaguinto’t Salagubang (September 2003) was an
unabashed pinoy indie-rock record. I’ll hold this one as a good band
primer, and the unfinished collection before the band’s first
full-length album, Formika. Standouts were the rock radio hit ‘Jaywalker‘, and ‘Saan Na?‘. Easily catch the shoegazing, and low-fi influences here.

For my otherwise fickle palette, however, the A Postcard From (October 2002) and Suwerte (December 2002) EPs are the undeniable keepers, Narda’s first and second, respectively. ‘Suwerte‘ and ‘Tanga‘ from the Suwerte EP, and ‘Crime-Fighting Mama‘ and ‘Kusina‘
from the A Postcard From Narda EP, are must-listens to any serious fan
of the band, as they should easily find their places to the list of the
most wonderful pop gems to come out from the local post-90s indie music
scene.

I’ve said this before,
but I’d like to point it out again: Narda has transcended the practiced
indie-pop standards that dominated the band scene around their EP and
Formika days, when name-dropping X foreign band (Club 8? a forgotten
New Wave band? a bossa-nova + electronic group from the once-formidable
Siesta label?) was needed to claim prestige.
In sum, in true-fan fashion, I therefore conclude this post that a
sound re-discovery should be in order, for this band that I’ve
surprisingly grown to adore, and actually bother to write about and
document through photos. Come on, its not time to sulk in a corner and
lament on this; do that during their last gig, when its forgivable.
So, there it is. We hope to see you all this thursday at: NARDAMAGEDDON: ang huling lipad ng narda april 12 2007, thursday cafe saguijo 9:30PM guest performances by: BOY ELROY THE DORQUES ISHI SWITCH and of course.. Narda: welcome punk 2.0
|
|
By Rome Jorge
DISCO punk revival is all the
rage, but most dudes just don’t get it. They rip-off the riffs,
ape the fashion and steal the sound. It’s like a theme park jingle
for them; welcome to New Wave Land with faux 1980’s sound replete
with retro sound synthesizers, drone guitars, eyeliner and other
cosmetic effects. Few capture the fierce vitality of a culture
rebelling against the self-indulgent heavy metal culture and the
failed hippie idealism of the late 1960’s and early 1970’s with
do-it-yourself aesthetics and sonic violence. Instead of world peace
and pot on a field of flowers, they wanted anarchy and coke on the
dance floor. That was their reality. Fewer still capture with
maturity and insight the pain of fleeting relationships in a
nihilistic and hedonist world of bright nights and dark deeds. That
was their life.
Narda, with their album
Discotillion, distills the essence of those heady days and serves it
to us straight in a shot glass. They got it right. And they got it
tight. What they got isn’t a put-on. They’ve jettisoned the
sweet pop sound of past efforts. This is punk 2.0 for 2007.
Their lyrics delve into the vivid
details of relationships on the edge. The sophisticated ear—those
schooled both by post punk music history and a life lived in the
Bohemian fray—will know this is potent stuff.
Gusto kitang sampalin dahil lagi
kang nambibitin. . .
Gusto kitang halikan kahit
ako’y iyong tinatanggihan. . .
Kay labo mo
-“Kay Lab” by Narda
Bago tayo magtaksilan
Bago tayo magsakitan
Isang daang taon
-“100 Taon” by Narda
And their edgy sound is just as
evocative as their words. Shrill distortions and killer vocals paint
a haunting aural landscape. With Katwo Librando on vocals, Ryan
Villena on drums, synthesizers and keyboards and Tani Santos on
guitar, the present is an edgy sound where the only discernable bass
is a baritone chorus. The medium is the message.
With Discotillion, the band
admirably sought to make a true thematic album with a complete aural
experience instead of a bunch of radio-friendly hits with tried and
tested hooks. Kudos.
Discotillion marks new level of
maturity for the band. It popped its cherries and sings about the
hangover and the heartache the morning after. Finally, punk music
for grown-ups in the 21st century
is here.

.. and a line form Luis Katigbak's King of Nothing to Do in the March 7, 2007 Manila Bulletin:
...I
went to the 2nd
year anniversary installment of the production night known as Ninja
Kiss...
Performers that night were the [the Ronnies, Arbie Won, Sound, Drip,
Bagetsafonik and Analog]... and the amazing Narda, who told us
that they were disbanding soon, and that their last gig will be at
SaGuijo on April 12... No matter how many bands you see or events you
go to or stories you
read, there will always be some people that you never get tired of;
that you hope will never stop doing what they do.

Hello everyone! It's been a good five years since Katwo and I started the band with JV, Wincy, and Ed. And through those years, other people have shared their talent and love with us. People like Nico Af, Jing, Naz, Jep, Tani and all the rest have been part of the Narda family. But all good things must pass. So we invite you all to Narda's last gig on April 12 at Saguijo. We will also launch the "Gasolina" music video as our token to everyone who have supported our music and passion for the past half decade. Thank you and we hope to see you on our last flight. - Ryan of Narda

here's something sent by nathanmy: May copy nako Discotillion mula pa nung narinig ko Molotov sa NU medyo matagal na yun, inabangan ko na album nyo. Eto malupet nauna ko pa nakita yung kopya sa pirata kesa sa Music One, pero dont worry I have the original, di ako tanga, P280 na nga lang bibili pa ba ko ng pirata, and can I mention na kahit ibenta pa ng P450 yung album it would still be worth it.
Belat.

We saw this review from John in Friendster: Discotillion is irritatingly addictive. It is an 11-track album full of holler yet can bring your feet on the dance floor, a rush of noise in your ears but something you would want to play over and over, until, without notice, you just had your last song syndrome!
Me and my friends witnessed their album launch last October in Saguijo, and oh gravity, that was superb! People were standing on chairs to see a glimpse of Katwo Librando, the band vocalist, complete with long eyelashes and that sexy little black dress by Kate Torralba, as she screams her heart out, with all-out spunk, angst, and total control over the microphone. Hand claps can be heard all over the venue after each song.
My personal favorites include: Ang Mitsa (Lagi nang ako...nahuhuli), Gasolina (Paandarin mo ako, paliyabin mo ako) Molotov (Hipan mo na ang salbabida) and 100 Taon (Isang daan taon, isang daang luha). Take note: all their songs are written in the vernacular. How patriotic!

We're sooooo happy to tell you that 'Discotillion' is number 2 in the PULSE.PH TOP 10 ALBUMS of 2006 - number 2! - in a list of BOTH local and foreign albums. Here's the recap: 2. Discotillion—Narda
We haven’t stopped listening to this album yet. Unbelievably fetching,
compelling, and sexy… and no, we’re not just talking about lead singer
Katwo Librando. Narda reinvented themselves (Ding, ang bato!) and
brought empowerment and dance punk to a whole new level in the local
music scene. The energy on the songs just keeps climbing, raising boy
fans’ temperatures and inspiring girl fans to take a stand—while
looking as fetching, compelling and sexy themselves.JJ
Last night, Narda was featured in HIT 99.5fm's Sunday Sessions. 'Twas a blast! The phones were ringing crazy! It's all good as it means lots of new listeners for us. (Thanks to Ia and Krista, our friends from the mailing list who called up) Most of the songs from Discotillion were performed and last night's listeners were treated to the premiere of the Narda versions of Le Tigre's "Deceptacon", Yeah Yeah Yeah's "Cheated Hearts" and Timmy Cruz's "Boy". The three hours passed by quickly with all the goins on in the booth.Stay tuned to this site, as we'll be putting videos from that rare live performance.

How's 2007 going for you all? We're starting the year running.. Narda is on the cover of this month's Anthem magazine and the subject of the feature article. It's free so do get a copy! And if you guys are free tonight, we're playing at Anthem's show-off party at Mayrics. See y'all! ;) We'll also be guesting on 99.5's Sunday Sessions on January 21. It's a rare live radio performance plus interview. This is the chance to ask all questions you've got for Narda. And we got some press lately! Luis Katigbak writes in the article entitled " Some thoughts and predictions for Pinoy music in 2007" in the 2bU section of the 4 January 2007 edition of the Philippine Daily Inquirer: Perhaps the year’s most startling reinvention belonged to Narda, who recently released their fierce, fast-paced second album “Discotillion.” We feel they could conquer the country, given proper promotion and distribution. Plus Luis mentions Narda, not once, not twice but three times in " 5X3: The Best Music of 2006" (in his regular King of Nothing To Do column) seen in the i section of the Manila Bulletin issue last January 10, 2007. He writes: ...So here we go—three Top 5 lists: my picks, in no particular order, for the year’s best Songs, Live Acts, and Albums.
BEST LIVE ACTS:
3. Narda. Their new dance-punky sound is great, the band plays with enthusiasm and attitude, and sexy-stylish lead singer Katwo Librando kicks ass.
...
BEST ALBUMS:
3. Discotillion by Narda. Short and sharp, fierce and fun: a welcome shot in the arm for the scene.
BEST SONGS:
1. "Ang Mitsa" by Narda. Catchy and ferocious, laced with surf guitar, synth stabs and rapid-fire bursts of drumming, this track can give you a case of Last Song Syndrome that you wouldn’t believe. And you can catch Narda at the following gigs (and see how our live act is about..): jan 13 (today) - 530pm Philippine Online Gaming Summit Philtrade Center Roxas Blvd 9pm Ateneo High School Freshman Night 12midnight Mayrics jan 20 (sat) - mag:net katipunan jan 21 (sun) - 99.5 Sunday Sessions live radio guesting jan 23 (tue) - Student Disco at Cafe Saguijo Makati jan 27 (sat) - Al's Bar BF Paranaque jan 30 (tue) - magnet katipunan feb 10 (sat) - marilao, bulacan feb 16 (fri) - poveda See you at the gigs! A blog review of Discotillion, courtesy of faithcruz (in edited form): Early this year, kamikazee came out with the song narda, a homage to angel locsin who played the title character to the tv version of the superhero. Unknown to most people, the band Narda became Narda long before the infamous song came out. They're a pretty-known act in the underground circuit and has been around for years. They won NU rock awards' In the Raw award in 2003 and became a favorite of critics and afficionados since. I loved the band ever since I heard "swerte." They used to sound really indie, a little mushy but in a good way. Now their sound is reminiscent of 80's techno rock, Depeche Mode, New Order and the Cure.
They came up this year with "Discotillion" and the whole album has been on continous repeat mode in my player lately. It has the same Narda brand of music that somehow leaves you flushed, the happy kind. They have a way of producing songs that gives you good vibes (maybe because of all the synths). "Discotillion" (the album couldn't have a better title) makes you want to dance all throughout the record. and sing along with repetitive chorus lines that run around your head even after everything's quiet already. The song molotov's "mahal na mahal kita / wala kang mapapala", for instance, has been on my head like a bug ever since i heard it midyear on NU. That was why I truly waited for this album to come out. None of the songs disappointed me. My personal favorites though are molotov, ang mitsa, kay lab, alta presyon and kamikazee. Yes. Yhey have a song entitiled kamikazee. and no, it's not a homage to any tv star they idolize.
All in all, it's a good record. Worthy of the 280Php you're going to spend on it.

Alalalala!! If you check out the latest issue of BURN
magazine, there's a feature on Narda by Luis Katigbak and also his take
on Discotillion. (Luis, thanksthanksthanks for the props!)
Chchcheckitout!
And if you missed Luis' THE KING OF NOTHING TO DO column in the i section of last Wednesday's (22.11.2006) Manila Bulletin, Here's a quote (note: the emphasis is by us):
Then there’s Discotillion, the new album by Narda. The
band—currently made up of original members Katwo Librando on vocals and
Ryan Vilena on drums, with relatively new additions Tani Santos on
guitars and Yaps Estagle and Jep Cruz on keyboards—has four EPs and a
critically-acclaimed full-length debut (Formika) to its credit,
but this new album is like nothing you’ve ever heard from them before.
Jettisoning their sweet retro-pop sound, they’ve gone full throttle in
a new direction, and the result is fantastic: immediate, in-your-face
songs, punk-influenced and pop-savvy, with buzzy synths, primal
guitars, furious drums, and Katwo’s distinctive, seductive, and
electrifying singing. Katwo’s voice has always had charm, and she’s
always been an excellent frontwoman, but there is something more urgent
and compelling about the way she performs now, especially if you watch
Narda live. "Ngayon mas nararamdaman ko yung pagka-active, being part
of the song, that before I didn’t feel," she told me. "Now I really
feel that it’s important that for [these songs], ako ‘yung kakanta.
Ngayon mas may ownership na ako, alam ko na ako lang ang makakagawa
nito, and that means a lot." It shows: especially on numbers like "Buti
Nga" and the incredibly LSS-inducing "Ang Mitsa," the conviction comes
across. Practically every track on Discotillion, though, is
worth listening to—and jumping around to, and shouting along to. It’s
definitely one of my favorite releases of the year so far.
We'd like to give our superduper thanks to Francesca Ayala and Aimee Marcos for the props we got in Francesca's Whipper Snapper column in the Young Section of the 24.11.2006 issue of the Philippine Star:
"We’ve been able to make what is essentially a ‘Western’
concept into something that is purely Pinoy," says Aimee. "Look at
Tropical Depression, Fatal Posporos, the E-Heads, Parokya ni Edgar,
Urbandub, Narda... There is so much scope and I’m so happy that we’re
veering towards being more open-minded about all sorts of different
genres.
Plus, Narda has a six page spread in PULP magazine's latest issue (yep, the one with the Cueshe midgets cover).
And this just in, our song "100 taon" is vying for a slot in NU107's stairway to seven charts. Do vote us in! Text:

Short and concise. Simplicity is key to this review of Discotillion, courtesy of tweetch: i saw narda at corik's once. or twice. i thought shunning the bass and replacing it with keys would be crippling. guess i was wrong.
discotillion is brilliant. it's fiesty. it's skipping. it's a red bull to my ears.
Discotillion is like Pringles. Once you pop you can't stop. haha! Damn, the cd is addicting i can't even pick a favorite track.
Listen To Molotov, their first single i think, and you'll see hundreds of disco balls spinning in your head. for sure.
